BIBLE STUDY NO. 38 (29 SEPT., 2016)
TOPIC: PATH TO LIFE – PART 3B
TITLE: How to Overcome Bad Habits
In our previous lessons on this topic: “Path to Life” Titled: “How to overcome bad habits’, we have learnt the meaning, the reasons why people practice such habits and the consequences of living with bad habits”. In today’s study, we are going to learn how to stop our bad, sinful and deadly habits before they stop us.
Satan’s plan on every Christian is to stop you from having true happiness and deprive you of making heaven in the end. Are you passionate (full of emotion and feeling), self willed, ever seeking to gain your own ends, self indulgent, and self centered? Examine your mind, heart and conduct. Do you strive for riches? Do you lust for power? Do you easily fall for outward appearance (sight) instead of the spiritual? Do you accept praise and hate correction or rebuke? If yes, you need to change today before a disaster. Do what is right, true and righteous and you will prosper in Jesus name.
If you continue in your bad habits of sexual immorality, lusts, pride, greed, heresies, murder (slander or gossip), drug use, rejection of advice or correction, cheating (covetousness), alcohol use, etc, you will die (Romans 8:13); but if you repent and change your ways, you will become a vessel of honour, good for God’s use – 2 Timothy 2:21.
If you follow the TRUTH and do good things that pleases God, your progress will be evident for all to see (1 Timothy 4:15). The road to heaven is not a bed or roses, laden with gold, easy to take; but as a Christian solider who you are, you must endure hardship (2 Timothy 2:3-4), that is a life of sacrifice, denying yourself pleasures and the desires that your flesh lust after and follow the way of the Lord; at the end of your story in this life, you will be glad you did the right things. You and your family will be happy here on earth and you will be with the Lord when you die. Change is possible. God said in Jeremiah 32:27, what is impossible with men is possible with God – Mark 10:27. You are no longer ignorant of the devices of Satan because of this topic, and so the devil does not have the power any longer to control you except you agree with him – 2 Corinthians 2:11.
You can overcome the devil by:
1) Resisting him – 1 Peter 5:8-9A.
Don’t allow external influence or temptation within you to make you fall into bad habit.
2) You will change when you learn to meditate on the word of God every day and night. You cannot come out of bad habits without being filled with the word of God.
3) You have to put off the former habits and make effort to replace them with new ones by renewing your mind – Ephesians 4:22-24; and
4) When you stop the old habits, replace them by renewing your mind, you must seal your decision with the baptism of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13A, Isaiah 42:16; Isaiah 30:21).
Next week is the concluding part of this topic. The sermon will be on “10 (ten) practical ways to get out of any habit”. It will help you and you can use the knowledge to help friends, family members who may be having challenges of bad habits presently. Better still; bring them to church to hear for themselves.
A) What lessons have you learnt for far on this topic?
B) What benefits have you received for yourself or someone else?
C) What question do you have on this subject?
